Hello,
It was nice to see so many at our book club evening last week. We had an excellent attendance despite the biting cold. The book we were reviewing was Rachel’s Shoe by Peter Lihou. Ultimately, we decided that it was a pleasant book for easy reading, but not more challenging than that. The characters were rather two-dimensional and the plot somewhat predictable, but it would make a good book for a rainy Sunday afternoon.
Review: Readability (story) 77/100
Quality of Language 73/100
Originality of idea 56/100
Value for money (‘recommendability’) 64/100
Many of us felt that the novel had been written with a movie in mind, and the adjective that best described the book was ‘cinematic’ – thank you Elizabeth.
With that in mind, below are the stars that we considered for the main roles. We were not too happy with Johnny Depp as Freddy, so I have substituted Daniel Craig who looks sultrier and definitely more Arian in the German sense. With that in mind, I could see myself reading the sequel – perhaps.

Jude Law as Tom Emma Watson as Rachel Daniel Craig as Freddy
Apropos of Daniel Craig, if you fancy a movie with a difference, I can recommend Cowboys and Aliens. Corny enough, as the title would suggest, but also convincing, and a good variation on a Western. This would be a great movie for students to analyse – not that I miss those days at all.
Attached are the suggestions for next session, which will be on Tuesday the 3rd of April at 18.00 at Kummisetä (downstairs). I have tried to take into consideration the requests for meatier books and diversity in writers.
As before, please reply to me with the titles in order of preference. I will give 20 points for a first choice, 15 for a second and so on. Please let me have your lists by Sunday 12th of February.
Best, Joanne
